Policies


Description

The class is designed to teach themes include including ubiquitous computing, novel interaction techniques, tools for enhancing designers' creativity, and rapid prototyping tools.

Prerequisites

Students need to be proficient at object oriented programming in either Java or C++. Students should have taken some higher level computer science courses. Possible courses include artificial intelligence, user interfaces, or software engineering.

Topics

There are no set topics for the class, since each iteration of the class consists of
  • seminal research work that has greatly influenced the field
  • the latest advancements of the research field from top conferences
  • existing research work that still stands the test of time today

Criteria

Grading

The grading is divided as follows:
  • Final Project 30%
  • Final Exam 20%
  • Mid Term Exam 10%
  • Assignments 20%
  • Quiz 10%
  • Blog 5%
  • Participation 5%
Letter grades will be given based on the following final grade percentages:
  • A - 90% and above
  • B - 75% to 90%
  • C - 60% to 75%
  • D - 50% to 60%
  • F - below 50%

Note:

  • Best 10 of all the quiz scores will be taken for final grades.
  • Students are encouraged to send in good/ relevant questions that can be included in quiz / mid term/ final exams
    • One extra point for each question sent for the quiz. Maximum of 3 points for each quiz.
    • Extra credits for questions for Mid-term / final exams.
  • Presentations on any CHI related topics(E.g: paper from UIST proceedings) in the class for 5 - 10 minutes will be awarded Extra credits(maximum of 10 points).
  • Participation grade is based on presence in the class, presentations, proposing discussion questions, etc.
  • Make-up Policy for Quizzes:
    In case of missing a quiz, the student can make it up by presenting a topic from UIST proceedings, the big book or any relevant topic in the class. A student can make up for maximum of 3 missed quizzes.
